IronMan to BeeMan

We spent the weekend in St. George where my Mister competed in his first IronMan.  It was a crazy weekend, but pretty amazing to consider what he did.  2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a marathon.  140.6 miles total.  He finished in a little over 14 hours.  Pretty amazing.  Even more amazing is that he'd like to do another one.  He figured he'd do a lot better on the run if he took some Ibu after the bike ride.

The volunteers at check-in gave us extra swim caps.  The boys can't wait to wear them to their swimming lessons next month.  J keeps saying that he wants his teacher to teach him "extra" stuff because he's going to do his first triathlon this summer.

Taking the bike to the swim/bike transition area.

This is where the 2 mile swim would take place.

Just coming out of the bike to run transition, he's looking pretty good.

Halfway done with the marathon.  He's hurting.  Luckily he heard another runner's advil bouncing around and asked for some.  After they kicked in, he finished strong.  We missed him coming in at the finish line because he sped up so much the last few miles.
I did get this picture of him with my cell phone after we met up with him at the finish line.
Our friend did get this clip of my Mister Crossing the finish line, he's pretty pleased.  He said he smiled the last several miles because he felt so good about what he had done.

We arrived home on sunday night, and on monday we had to head to Orem to pick up our bees.  This is the hive minus the top.

The bees. (and my mister)

The queen

Installing.  This was freaky.  My Mister got stung twice, and several bees chased us into the house.  I 'm kind of wondering what we're thinking.  Hopefully they calm down now that they're not getting violently shaken into the hive.

Go, KYLE!!!! Benson is sitting on my lap and says that thinking about your triathalon makes his stomach hurt. That's cuz he ran a kids' marathon with his Dad last month and knows how hard it is!
Love, The Bullochs :)

Kyle is amazing!!! Congrats on the Iron Man - that is a huge accomplishment! And (a smaller?) congrats on the bees - I'm really interested in seeing how this goes for you guys! (You are my farming test cases;))

Wow, I'm always impressed that people can do stuff like the Ironman. I thought I was really tough when I ran a half-marathon (and I didn't even run it fast), but then I hear about these kind of events, and those 13 miles really seem whimpy all of a sudden. It's such a nice accomplishment though, and so fun to support family in those things.

Also, I'm really impressed with all the gardening stuff you do...and I'll be curious to see how those bees work out for you guys. My husband's parents kept bees and I guess it's a good thing to keep bees, but I'm terrified of them...

Fran- I ran a half marathon a few years ago, I thought that was as far as I'd ever want to run. A marathon seemed crazy. Now I'm registered for my first in September. Yikes. :) An Ironman still seems insane though.

I'm a little terrified of the bees too, that's why my Mister is doing all the work. I'm slowly getting myself used to standing by the hive. I'm currently comfortable about 3 feet away. :)

That's awesome that you signed up for a marathon. It was (is???) one of my goals for this year to run a marathon. But, life has been kind of crazy the last 4 weeks or so, and I haven't had much/any time to get back into running after the baby. Now I feel like I might be a little late for a fall marathon. When did you start training?

I've been riding my bike a lot, but not running much. The training schedule I have says 18 weeks, but I have 16. :) I'm hoping the bike riding has me in good enough shape that the 2 weeks isn't going to make that much difference. :)

I am excited to see how the top bar hive works out for you. I want to try them.

Mike- It's pretty cool so far. After two weeks the bees had built 6 bars of comb filled with baby bees and two bars of empty comb that we're guessing will be honey. Next time he checks on them I'll take a picture. They don't get as crazy when he checks on them as they did when he was installing them (after that I thought I'd never want to go out with him to take pictures ever again...).
